I rebuilt the shifter that I installed in my 82 last year using a short section of Tygon Tubing compressed into where the nylon insert would go. Also check out the welds between to half-sphere and the shaft. My original shifter had cracked welds that made the sphere loose on the main shaft. If the welds are broken get a new shifter assembly because the sphere is made of some kind of casting that absorbs oils and makes it near impossible to reweld.
My original stock shifter would hit the dash in 1st and 3rd gears because of the slop. My rebushed replacement feels like I installed a brand new unit.
