Swapping truck beds

I was running around yesterday and saw a 73-87 short bed truck with a 88(or later) stepside bed on it and it looked good. This made me wonder if it took a lot to swap it out or if it was easy.
I have an 85 long bed and I wonder if I can put a later model 8 ft bed on it.
Has anyone out there tried to do this? If so, what kind of problems will I have to deal with?
Trying to find a earlier bed without rust around here is tough or expensive. If a later model one would work, there is a better chance of getting one.
Any advise? Pictures?
