Door(s) problem

Doors are off. Can't get the hinge pins out. Did a search. Didn't quite understand this suggestion -
"Cut the hing at the joints with a hack saw."
Tried a big hammer from underneath, heating with a small propane torch - even cut the top off of one and tried pounding it out from the top.
I could take the hing off the body, but isn't there a plate behind them that could fall off? That scares me a little.
Any help would be appreciated. I can't paint the jams until I get the pins and bushings replaced.
Many thanks
