Billet Column Shifter - Help Please!

I just got a billet column shift lever for my 76, and I can't seem to get it to work right. At first it wouldn't even go in the slot, but I noticed a burr or two sticking down in the way, so I just took a small file and knocked those down a bit. Now it will go in to the point where i can put the pin back in, but it won't "lock" into any gear, including Park! Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Do I possibly have the wrong shifter? The end on the new one is totally different from the original, but I figured it was just a new design or something...am I wrong?

Thanks in advance....
