How do you know when your torke converter is bad?

Ever since I had a new flywheel put in there's been a lot of noise coming from the converter or that area at least. All of the bolts are tight and everything seems in order. It still makes a quick screeching sort of a grind noise when I start it, obviously it's not engaging right but can the converter be bad as well?
