700R4 Flexplate and Possible Rebuild Question

I am going to pull my tranny to replace the flexplate. I don't know for certain that it is cracked, but I think that is the sound I am hearing (the flexplate rubbing on the inside of the bellhousing maybe).

My tranny slips a little and downshifts hard into 1st. My question is if I do find that my flexplate is cracked, should I:

a) replace the flexplate only and not rebuild the tranny, or

b) rebuild the tranny while I have it out of the truck (no small feat)

Also, what flexplate should I get for a stock 305 with 700R4. Summit has their own brand, B&M, and TCI.

What about 700R4 rebuild kits from Summit? Is $356 too much?
