305 wont start

305 wont start
this motor came out of my 72 4 years ago runing in great condition. I have had to pull a 250 out of my 81 1/2 ton and put this 305 in there. the dizzy had been pulled prior to going innto the 81, now everything is in place and I'm pretty sure the dizzy is correct and the plug wires are correct on the dizzy, if I throttle the carb, by the way the carb is a edelbrock 1405 manual choke, (not hooked up)
I cant see the gas ,but I can see where you can see the mist comming out of the top of the carb. it wont start. when i crank the motor over it cranks good and then maybe after 4 to 8 seconds of cranking it will back fire,(sometimes flames out the carb). I have rechecked the timing, I'm pretty sure it is correct from what the chilton's says. new spark plugs. could it be that I am missing something, I have to get this running today and I am getting no-where...

Please any input I would appreciate and defenitly run outside to try
