Question best place to pull temperature

anyone got suggestions on where the best place to set the temperature sensor? the cross over on the manifold is out, the hose is too close. i have a sensor in the drivers head right now that i think took a crap, gauge stopped working. it was never accurate anyway because the engine and sensor are 1995 and the hole is smaller than the 1972 sensor. my water pump has the plug in the top that looks to be the right size, but isnt that water cooled already? should nt i want to take the hot temp? how about a spacer under the existing housing with a sensor in it? my race car friend thinks this would be best, but i am having a tough time finding the spacer with the hole in it. any suggestions?
