Thumbs up Cut outs

I want to run cut outs on my truck and was wandering about possible damage to my engine. I have always heard that it can hurt your engine but I read Ls1.com and alot of people are running them and racing all the time with out damage. I plan on having them almost right after the headers, so does anyone have experiance running cut outs or open headers for a long time? Did it affect the engine good or bad? I just want them for the sound I already have spintech one chamber mufflers and they just arent as loud as I would like, I want to set off car alarms and make people roll up there windows in traffic. Thanks
