gauge questions

I have a 91 style dash cluster swapped into my truck when we done a nv4500 swap to it. Since the swap over I have had a issue of the water temp gauge reading hotter than normal on this engine, have swapped in the newer style sending unit same thing. Is there some way to calibrate the gauge with added resistance or something short of replacing the gauge? Everything else works good.
