What does it take to rebuild a rear-end

The Story:

My Brother gernaded the rear-end in the 1996 burben 10-bolt?

The issue:

The quote to fix is about 800 dollars

The point:

Rather fix it myself then see 800 dollars go byebye.

The question:

what do i need to know and are there any special tools for the job that must be on hand before.

I've done bearing changes but never done a complete over haul of a differential. So any advise/education/thoughts/prayers would be great
