Fuel tank question

In the reassembly process of my truck I noticed that the fuel guage was reading full scale. I removed the float assembly from the tank and noticed that the brass strip that went from the float housing to the main wire terminal of the float assembly was broken in half. I soldered it back together and re-installed it. It nows stays at 1/4 tank. Is this brass strip the resistive element of the float system or do they just use it as the conductor from the main wire terminal to the float assembly? Also does anyone know if the speedo cable is a parts store item?
