Question about Detent Cable

In a continuing quest to "de-hotrod" the truck I took off the hands of my nephew, I have discovered there is no passing gear. According to the numbers, this truck came with a 305 engine with a TH400 transmission. The 305 was replaced with a 350 engine, and the TH400 was replaced with a TH350. I believe the TH400 had an electric passing gear, but I think the TH350 uses a detent cable. Am I right on this? There is no cable on this truck, so if this is so, then can I simply connect a detent cable from the carb to the trans to fix this problem? Is there any compatability issues I need to be aware of? Thanks for any advice folks.
