Question Rear disk brake question

Hey guys,

I am installing my rear disc kit on my 70 c 10.
Does the C shaped snap ring that is in between the piston and inner brake pad have to be installed? or is it just for shipping?

Right now I have the pads installed without this ring in and everything "looks"
ok. If the spring is put in there will be a lot of tension on the pads relative to
the discs. The kit is from classic performance products.

Please respond, I have very little brake systems experience.

Thanks
