Breather line

I just found out yesterday will trying to finish my lift, that both axels breather line is cloged with dirt. Im sure that this has been like this for a real long time, but its got me worried. Is there any thing bad thats going to happened because it wont breath? Whats the point of the breather line, why isnt the axel just sealed? I plan to clean the fitting on the axel and put new breather lines on, but what sucks is having to take apart the axel to get the dirt out once I clear the fitting.
