Torque converter/flexplate?? help

yesterday i got the t/c put into the tranny i know i got the notches lined up and all cause it went the whole ways in and the fins on it almost rub the tranny. when i bolted tranny back to motor there is a gap big enough to fit my finger through btween t/c and flex plate. now qwestion is. can i just pull t/c out a lil till it hits flex plate or have i screwed sumthing up. really dont wanna bust sumthing in the t/c when i go to drive it casue parts store will only take it back if i havnt put tranny fluid to it. im confused wit this please help
