Wood Interior

I just got a brillaint idea (maybe). OK. My door panel inserts on my 72 are all worn and scratched. I got to thinking.. why not make some new ones in Woods class out of real wood. Then why not make my own parts for the gauge panel, glovebox, ect. out of the wood of my choice.
Has anyone ever done this? Good idea? Bad idea? How will it stand up to the heat and the sun on hot summer days in parking lots.
