dana 44 help

Heres what happened my brother was pulling out some trees with m,y truck and he twisted off the left fornt u-joint. I was lloking it over trying to fiqure out why it broke . The font has a lockering in it could that be why? The front left axle acts like it isnt connected to the carrier and it just spins with out moveing the driveshaft or the other axle. But when he was pulling the tree he had all four wheels spining so i dont know exactly what happen but the yokes for the u jonits are both bent and needing replace if any one could help identify what went wrong it would be greatly apriecated.

Thanks
