Question Help me out with painting my grill!

I pulled the grill out of my 72 chevy, ( egg crate looking grill ) I want to paint it black. What type paint is best to use? ( I will be useing spray paint cans ) And what is the best way to prep it? Also do I need primer? If so what type? I do not have a paint sprayer. Will be useing cans, semi gloss black for final color.
So what do you guy recomend? I have seen some painted before with the paint peeling off. I am trying to avoid this.
Sam
