Turbo350 Tranny Question

A Buddy of mine was changing the fluid/filter in his 350 tranny Sat. Once he removed the old filter he was reaching for a rag and someting fell into the drain pan. Once fished out it was a cylindrical piece of machined metal (part) that is about 1'' long by 1/4'' in dia.

He has no idea where it goes. He can find a hole that it fits into but it won't stay there. There is also a vacant hole that has a spring that goes across in the hole itself. He claims he couldn't put back the piece there because of the spring.

Does anyone have any idea what this part may be or where it might go???

And, if he cannot find out what to do with the part, what does a person do with a truck up on jacks? Does he put it back together and hope for the best? Any ideas???

Thanks in advance
