ps gear box rebuild

Ok, I am in the process of rebuilding my ps box, and I need some help, can anyone recommend a way to get the large ring off of the end cover on the box? The directions say to rotate the ring until it lines up with the hole in the end cover....i can't rotate the ring at all. Also, can anyone give me an idea of the tricks and additional tools I will need once I get into the box itself. Being as its almost 40 years old, I would like to replace every and any seal, o-ring, teflon seal, etc that I can....the ps fluid that came out of this box was crude oil BLACK....so I would rather replace everything at once.

Next will be the ps pump rebuild....any specific tools I will need in this venture would also be appreciated.
Thanks
