What would have caused this damage? - Speed Sensor

I pulled the speed sensor out of my old tranny (4L60E) to put in the new one I got. When I pulled it out of the old tranny, this is what I found!!! It appears to have been working.....or at least the speedometer was working....

Any idea on what would have caused this? Also, could it have caused some of the tranny issues I have been having? I assume that since the speedo was working ok, the PCM was also getting a good signal....

Comments?
