Than not a foam filter, its a pre-filter. There is a regular filter behind that. The pre-filter keeps the chunks and bugs from getting into the filter and plugging it up too fast. The one I heard about (and actually saw go down in a blaze of glory) is the Edelbrock foam filter that is triangular.
