ammeter/alternator help needed

I upgraded from stock to a one wire, 60 amp alternator about 3 months ago. I had a gauge cluster screwed to the bottom of the dash, and everything worked just fine. Then I replaced the stock idiot light dash with an all gauge type, with teckh tips from GMCpauls website.(he returned a question via email in one day, for those who may want to know). It went really well, it all worked fine except the ammeter was way over to the 'C" side, way, way over.
That lasted for about 20-30 minutes of running time, now I dont even see the needle! Must have burnt it up !!! Would going to a higher output alternator cause this, or do you think the gauge was on its last legs ?
