which would be easier?

replacing the head gaskets in my 87 jimmy, 2.8 v6, 5 speed. or taking out the whole engine and putting in another then having the old one to look at/rebuild?
Please keep in mind, i have a bad back and limited access to helpers with an engine hoist.
also, any other engine that would be a direct swap with this 5 speed tranny?
