Many people in the business of repairing wooden boats use epoxy to seal the wood and then topcoat that with a quality varnish. In our testing, http://www.mar-k.com/wood_finish_testing_ii.html , we found marine varnish products failed after only a few months unless they are applied over a good seal coat of epoxy or similar product. Epoxy by itself is not resistant to the sun, but when coated with a UV absorbing varnish, is very durable. We also found Pine generally lasts longer than Oak.
