removing column shifter?

i just finished putting the m-20 4 speed in the 68. love it. a match made in heaven . just swap everything straight across and change 2 bolts in bellhousing. thats it. oh yea cut hole in floor. how do i gut all the linkage out of the column and get the shifter off? i rather not pull column out just now. any help? thanks. pkj
