67 Spare Tire mounting

For as long as I've been driving my truck I've just had my spare tire laying in the bed. I'm trying to get it mounted into the cradle, but I can't seem to get it to fit. It's a 235/75 tire, I'm trying to lift the crade up to get the little loop hooked, but it seems like the tire is too fat. Do I have the tire in upside down? Is there something I'm doing wrong?
