steering column maintenance-?

I had to replace my column shifter because it was worn out, and since I have it down this far, is there any maintainence that could be/should be done at this point? Everything seems to be working pretty good right now. Just wondering if there is any lubrication that could be done. Also, I read a thread that said you could shorten your steering column by loosening the brackets and pushing it forward, to give yourself more room - is that easier now? Thanks for your help in advance.
