I understand what you're saying. However, if you purchased a sub that requires 1.5 cubic feet of air space when you only have room for .75, building a box to fit your space limitations isn't going to do much good.

As long as you know your information, you can start w/a box that fits & reverse calculate to determine what would be an ideal sub or you can have the sub & calculate what's required for the box.

Both methods will work.
