Patina Paint Jobs

Rockrln got me thinkin with his "low buck" painting vs. shiny paint job question in his thread. Being that I have no experience painting, I wonder if this would be a better idea in the end because you wouldn't see any orange peel or runs after you "rough it up". How is this accomplished? They mention something about a scothbrite pad or something.

Here is a awesome example of the look I'd be aiming at.



Also, does anybody have a list or examples of the factory 67 colors that were available? Would you paint a rust color, then rough up, then paint a factory color and rough through to the rust color?
