I used to go to Boeing Surplus and buy bars of aircraft aluminum in different thicknesses. It was still a little expensive. Cut it up in blocks, drill it (what a mess), belt sand & blast them. They looked good, but way too
 much labor. I now just order them from CPP and get on with it!
