Oldsmobile steering wheel removal

Hey all. I wasn't really sure where to post this but it seems to me that quite a few people check this part of the board out so I guess I'll ask here;

Is there any trick to removing a steering wheel in an Olds Cutlass (1985 I think). Found a really nice read leather wheel in one today that I thought would look great in my truck (if it'll fit) but I broke my removal tool while trying to nab it. I fell into a converstation with a "guy" later on and he was talking about a lock plate? Is there something more than just a nut on the center shaft that holds the wheel on or was my removal tool just a POS? (well OK...it's a POS anyway but hadn't failed me up to this point. I'm going to try and find a better one today or maybe tomorrow).
Thanks in advance,

Greg
