need some advice on testing radios

I posted earlier about hunting for an original AM or AMFM radio. I plan on hitting a few yards in the next few days and was wondering how you guys would test a radio without actually hooking up the hot wire to the fuse panel. Also I had an offer to buy a radio from a board member that is missing a knob. I looked throught the parts catalogs on the board and cant find just knobs. Will knobs off of another GM vehicle or radio work till I can come across matching knobs? Thanks in advance and I consider all opinions.

Dave
