Question Whats the difference?

On my truck I have the heater controls in the middle of the dash area, they are up and down sliders that control defrost, fan speed, and temp. Ive seen some others that have the controls which look much different under the dash. What is the real reason they did that? I cant imagine how you could make an "economy heater" and not have just a regular heater.
