Trailing Arms Question

Can you help? I currently have a 1969 Chevy Step Side and currently is on leaf spring and 6 lug drums all around. Think it was classified as a heavy duty?? Anyway, I'm interested in converting the leafs to trailing arms. Is this a real nightmare? Is there alot of welding if any? Someone questioned the cross-member. He said I would need the one that resembles an oxen collar. I do have that, It has the drive shaft going thru it. Is this the right one. By doing the swap out, my son want to replace the coil springs for air bags. He says it is a direct swap. If you can answer any of these questions please reply.
