sandblasting

well, today i tried out my sandblaster. i blasted about 1/4th of a rally rim, and thought to myself "i didnt picture it comming out this rough-looking on the baremetal".

is that whats normal? also, whats the common method to preparing "viewable" parts for refinishing? i suppose i might need to sand it down quite a bit after im done stripping the rust off, but the shape of the rim is going to make that a total pain in the ass.

tips, stories, etc?
