4X4 Alignment Questions

I recently rebuilt my D44 front with new balljoints, bearings, etc... along with polyurethane spring bushings. I also just purchased some new (to me) BFG 35x12.50 15s that are basically brand new. I was hoping to align the toe-in myself for the time being so that it can be driven around. Beings that it is a D44 solid axel I don't believe there are any caster or camber adjusments. I know that a good rule of thumb is to center the steering wheel and adjust the toe so that it is 1/8th inch toed in. My question is can I just take this measurement at the forward surface of the rim or will that allow for too much of a difference at the edge of the tires themselves? Any other tips for alligning 35s would be appreciated.
