'51 fuel gauge problem

I just installed a new (original reproduction) fuel gauge on my '51 truck, as well as a brand new sending unit. All is 12 volt. When I turn on the ignition, the fuel needle jumps to the south (bottom side) of the gauge and never shows any fuel level. I've run a new wire from the sending unit, checked my grounds, etc., etc. Can anybody help me?

Thanks,

Gary Rose
