a/c control levers

I think I got a problem. I ordered new a/c control levers as one of mine is broken. I looked at it last night and am puzzled for what to do. The shaft that the levers rotate around is held in place by a steel plate. This plate is set on two pins which are "hammered" flat to hold it in place. It looks like I need to grind off the pins to remove the plate and then the levers. All is good to this point. The problem is I dont know how I will hold the plate in place after re-assembly. This was much easier on the 68 which has heat only. I know this is probably hard to understand but if anyone does understand and has a solution, let me know. I may try to post a pic later to help explain.
