Post starting the engine with out the tranny in?

i have my tranny pulled out but my engine is still mounted. is it ok to run it? or do i have to worry about it falling forward or backwards? because the tranny is what stabilized it from that. and is the flywheel ok as long as theres nothing in the way? thanx in advance
