High Torque Stater Install Questions

I am putting one of those small high torque starters on my 68 project. I am just bolting it up for now, just have the motor (64 327 block)and trans (700 R4) in the frame, I am in the nuts and bolts stage of the project. I mounted the starter and noticed that the max.35 gap between the ring gear and stater gear is a bit larger. I am most concerned with an issue that I noticed when I pry the starter gear into the ring gear it stays as if it isn't aligned well. I need to push it to return into the starter and I can see where it rubs the ring gear tooth. Is that normal? Will it disengage easier when turning? Just don't have much experience to know if this is normal or not.

Thanks
