cheyenne super bedside/options

I am looking at a 72 cheyenne super in the junkyard, it is a lwb half ton. It has two small square doors in the bed. One on each side with locks on them. What were these for?

Also the truck is a real super because it has the option sticker. It says blue cloth interior, would that be the houndstooth? And the truck does not have carpet, but a rubber floor mat. The truck also does not have a chrome front bumper, it is painted blue. Could this truck been ordered like this? Or do you think it has just been changed over the years?
