How I picked up 150 horsepower for $5...or the secret governor kids won't get!!!
I just bought this nice little 71 swb 4x4 pu: 350/350, QJET, 3:07s, skinny tires, dual exh and runs great...but, it wouldn't go over 65 mph-top speed.
It was not driven much so: 1. I changed the carb filter (lots of rust & dirt). That didn't do it. 2. I checked the lines into & the pickup tube size. Ah ha---small 5/16 six cyl lines had been used to change the tank...but wait, there's more! 3. Look at the filter added to the bottom of the pickup tube, inside the tank, where the sock would be. I am sure it seemed like a good idea to someone at one time...but, notice the size of the openings in & out on the filter. They are just UNDER 3/16"!!!! They didn't even trim the openings up to the next stepped size. That wouldn't feed a lawn mower. I may try that filter idea if I can get one in 3/8". You never know what the PO did and boy can it be a surprise...and I thought I had seen it all. |
