Auto Steering column removal?

I started removing my atuomatic steering column without asking any questions, so here's where I am. I have removed the rag joint from the steering sector, I have removed all the brackets under the dash, I have removed the bracket from the firewall. Now how do I get it to go thru the fire wall. The automaic levers, do they have to be removed, because they are going to be difficult to get thru the slot. I did not remvoe the steering wheel either, do I need to? Help please. Thanks
