Auto column shift linkage conflict question

Truck is 1959 with 350 & TH350 trans and NP203 transfer case. I want to install a tilt column with auto shift. Problem is at the transmission there is no room for the pivot rod from the trans to the frame, the arm that accepts the rod from the column hits the stock crossmember. I'm not the first to put a TH350 in a 55-59, am I correct in assuming the stock crossmember must be taken out? Or does someone like Lokar make a cable connection between the bottom of the column and the trans shift rod? Thanks Patrick
