tailgate panel question

What's the best way to remove the Chevrolet letters from a 1972 tailgate band. I need to replace the woodgrain decal. I don't want to waller out the holes while removing the letters. Also, what's the best way to put the letters back on? Once the letters are back on, can you insert something into the hole to flare it out so they won't fall off? Your help is greatly appreciated.
