My DJM flip kit install pics

I just installed one of these on my '86 SWB last weekend. Thought I would share some pics since there are quite a few threads on lowering right now. This is not meant to be a how-to thread, just some random pics from my installation. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

EDIT - Okay, I re-ordered the pictures and added some captions to make this more of a how-to. I will admit up front this is not 100% comprehensive, so don't sue me if I've missed a step. And as always recommended, please READ and FOLLOW the manufacturer's directions first. Use this only as a supplement.

I bought the DJM-FK1024-5 kit from Summit Racing for $84.75. Since I bought a few other things at the same time, I shared the $11.75 handling charge across multiple items. This is just the basic flip kit from DJM. There is also a deluxe flip kit that comes with new spring plates and U-bolts, as well as a C-notch kit available.

Basic flip kit.

Step 1 - remove shock absorbers and the original leaf springs from the truck. You will need a good floor jack and at least 2 sets of jack stands along with a selection of sockets and wrenches. I used a large set of jack stands under the rear bumper and a smaller set to support the axle. I also had the front of the truck on a third set of stands to get more room under there to work. I don't remember all the bolt sizes, but I know there are 3/4", 11/16", 5/8" and 9/16" fasteners. You will probably need a breaker bar and some WD-40 to bust some of these bolts loose. An impact wrench is useful if you have one, but not all of the bolts will be accessible.

Step 2 - remove and reverse the spring center bolt.

Spray threads with WD-40

Use Vise Grips as backup, and impact wrench to remove nut

Flip the bolt so that the 'head' is on the top-side and nut is on bottom-side.

Use large channel locks to squeeze springs back together so you can start the nut. Tighten with impact wrench.

Step 3 - drill a hole in the original spring plate to clear the nut of the spring center bolt you just flipped. I used a 3/4" hole saw for this. It took maybe 5 minutes total to drill both spring plates. The hole is centered side-to-side, and is offset approximately 1" front-to-back. You will need to measure your installation to get the exact placement.

Step 4 - re-install the springs under the axle. I supported one end of the axle with the floor jack and used a jack stand to hold the spring while I stabbed the bolts. Just start the nuts, do not tighten yet.

Step 5 - install the U shaped axle locator bracket from the kit on top of the spring with the offset hole toward the FRONT on the truck. Then install the original U-bolts and the modified spring plate so that the hole drilled previously lines up with the spring center bolt. Tighten U-bolts to factory specs.
