Column Shift Problems/anyone ran into this?

I got the column shift in my c10 but everytime I drive it after the first shift the teeth in the shifting mechanism(does someone know what its really called?) gets all intwined. either it doesnt go into gear or from a stop goes into reverse after a few good jams.
Do I need a new shifting mechanism?
Can I rebuild the one it already has?,or should I put the floor shift?
has any one ran into this.
