Power steering box

Just finished putting disc brakes from an 81 truck. I want to install the power steering box but don't have a pump (donor truck has Cadillac eng). Would you damage the steering box if you don't have fluid going to it? Could you just fill it and run a hose from pressure side to return side?

I have been working on this for several years now and it's one thing for the wife to complain about projects in the yard but I'm getting tired of seeing some of them.

When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent. George Carlin
